When we think of artists who have redefined Afrobeats with a perfect blend of hip-hop, R&B, reggae, and African rhythms, one name that stands out is Runtown. Born Douglas Jack Agu on August 19, 1989, in Enugu, Nigeria, Runtown has carved a niche for himself as a singer, songwriter, and producer with a global appeal. Today, we celebrate him as our Man Crush Monday for his incredible contributions to the music industry.

Runtown

Early Life and Journey to Stardom

Runtown grew up in different parts of Nigeria, including Enugu, Abuja, and Lagos, after losing his father at a young age. His journey into music began in 2007 when he teamed up with Phyno and relocated to Lagos to pursue their dreams. Through a chance connection with J. Martins and mentorship from Timaya, Runtown refined his craft, eventually releasing his debut single, Party Like It’s 1980, in 2011.

In 2014, Runtown dropped the hit single Gallardo featuring Davido, a track that earned him the “Best Collaboration of the Year” award at the Nigeria Entertainment Awards.

The Breakthrough: Mad Over You

Runtown became a household name in 2016 with the release of his chart-topping single, Mad Over You. The self-produced track, inspired by African beauty, brought a fresh sound to the industry and landed on the Billboard Twitter Top Tracks chart at number 38.

The success of Mad Over You solidified Runtown’s place in the global Afrobeats movement, with fans worldwide falling in love with his music.

Independent Ventures and the Soundgod Era

In 2018, Runtown took his career into his own hands, establishing Soundgod Music Group. Under this label, he released notable projects such as the EP Tradition in 2019 and the album Signs in 2022. Known for his lyrical depth and ability to infuse diverse sounds, Runtown continues to captivate audiences with every release.

Awards and Achievements

Runtown’s talent has earned him several accolades, including:

  • African Artiste of the Year at the 2017 Vodafone Ghana Music Awards.
  • Multiple wins at the Soundcity MVP Awards Festival, including Best Collaboration of the Year.
