Jude Lemfani Abaga, better known by his stage name M.I Abaga, was born on October 4, 1981. As a Nigerian rapper, singer, songwriter, and record producer, M.I Abaga is recognized as one of Africa’s most influential rappers. His career began to soar after the release of his breakthrough track “Crowd Mentality” in 2006. This marked the beginning of a prolific career that has significantly shaped the Nigerian and African music landscape.
M.I Abaga was born in Jos, Plateau State, Nigeria, and grew up listening to a diverse range of artists including Lauryn Hill, Bob Marley, and Jay-Z. These influences played a crucial role in shaping his unique style. He attended Baptist High School in Jos before pursuing higher education at Calvin College in Michigan, where he studied Business and Economics. During his time at Calvin College, M.I Abaga honed his musical talents by performing at various school shows and concerts.
Upon returning to Nigeria in 2003, M.I Abaga released his debut album, Talk About It (2008), which earned him critical acclaim and several awards. His mixtape, Illegal Music (2009), and its follow-ups, Illegal Music II (2012) and Illegal Music 3: The Finale (2016), further cemented his status in the Nigerian hip-hop scene. M.I Abaga’s subsequent albums, including The Chairman (2014), Rendezvous (2018), and A Study on Self Worth: Yxng Dxnzl (2018), continued to showcase his versatility and lyrical prowess.
M.I Abaga has received numerous accolades throughout his career. Notable awards include the MTV Africa Music Awards (2009) and several Hip Hop World Awards. His contributions to the music industry have earned him a reputation as a pioneer of the Afrobeats movement. He was also appointed a United Nations Goodwill Ambassador in 2012, further highlighting his influence beyond music.
From 2015 to 2019, M.I Abaga served as the CEO of Chocolate City, a major Nigerian record label. Under his leadership, the label flourished, and M.I Abaga’s role was instrumental in its success. In March 2020, he announced his departure from Chocolate City and launched his own label, Incredible Music. This move marked a new chapter in his career, allowing him to explore new artistic and business opportunities.
M.I Abaga’s career has also been marked by notable feuds, including those with Kelly Hansome, Iceberg Slim, and Vector. These rivalries have sparked significant discussions within the music industry and among fans. Despite the controversies, M.I Abaga has shown resilience and growth, eventually collaborating with Vector on the track “Crown of Clay” and other projects that highlight the positive aspects of African music.
In his personal life, M.I Abaga married Eniola Mafe in Lagos on September 22, 2022. His influence extends beyond music, as he is admired for his support of various social causes, including the Jostified campaign. M.I Abaga’s impact on the music industry is undeniable, with many contemporary artists citing him as an inspiration.
M.I Abaga’s journey from a young artist in Jos to a global music icon is a testament to his talent and dedication.
