Dr Sid, born Sidney Onoriode Esiri on May 1, 1980, in Lagos, Nigeria, is one of the most iconic figures in the Nigerian music industry. From a background in dentistry to a flourishing music career, Dr Sid’s story is a true testament to following one’s passion.

Dr Sid

Early Life and Education

Dr Sid hails from Delta State but was raised in Lagos. He grew up in a family of creatives—his mother is a fashion designer, and his father, Justus Esiri, was a legendary actor and a Member of the Order of the Niger (MON). Known for his role as the village headmaster in the famous Nigerian sitcom of the 1980s, Dr Sid’s father was an inspiration.

Despite his early interest in entertainment, Dr Sid pursued academics, graduating from the Nigerian Air Force Secondary School in Ikeja and then the University of Ibadan, where he studied dentistry and dental surgery. However, his heart was always in entertainment, participating in school plays and winning dance competitions during his student years.

Music Career Beginnings

In 1999, Dr Sid signed with Trybe Records as a choreographer, later becoming a backup dancer for the Trybesmen. In 2002, his music career kicked off when he became a member of Da Trybe and featured on the iconic Nigerian hip-hop track “Oya.” His debut single “Don’t Stop” earned significant attention, including the number 1 spot on the MBI Top Ten for 8 weeks. However, his music had to be put on hold as he completed his degree.

Transition to Music Full-Time

In 2007, Dr Sid made the leap from dentistry to music full-time, signing with Don Jazzy’s Mo’ Hits Records. He featured on the Mo’ Hits Allstars collective album Curriculum Vitae, which included hits like “Booty Call” and “Close to You.” By 2009, Dr Sid was recording his debut solo album Turning Point, featuring hit tracks like “Something About You” and “Pop Something” with D’banj. The album was a commercial success, solidifying his place in the industry.

Career Highlights and Mavin Records

After the breakup of Mo’ Hits Records, Dr Sid joined Don Jazzy’s new label, Mavin Records. His sophomore album Siduction was released in 2013, featuring collaborations with artists like Tiwa Savage, Ice Prince, and Wizkid. Some of the standout tracks from this album include “Surulere,” “Afefe,” and “Lady Don Dada.”

Dr Sid’s career took another leap when he ventured into acting, starring in The Last 3 Digits, which won the People’s Film Festival’s Best International Film award in Paris.

With a blend of musical talent and an ever-growing fanbase, Dr Sid continues to be a force in the Nigerian entertainment scene. His transformation from a qualified dentist to a successful musician is not just inspiring but a reminder that it’s never too late to follow your dreams.
