In the Afrobeat scene, few names resonate with as much charisma as May D. Known for his smooth voice and knack for creating catchy, feel-good tunes, May D has contributed significantly to Nigeria’s music industry since his breakout in 2011. This Throwback Thursday, let’s rewind to the milestones that have shaped his career and secured his place in Nigerian music history.
Born Akinmayokun Awodumila on December 28, 1984, in Lagos, Nigeria, May D grew up in a family of seven and developed an early love for music. He pursued his education at the University of Lagos, where he studied mass communication, which perhaps helped sharpen his lyrical storytelling and communication skills.
May D’s career took off in 2011 when he joined Square Records, the renowned label owned by Nigerian R&B duo P-Square. His debut single, “Soundtrack,” was released that same year and quickly garnered attention, with its music video, directed by Clarence Peters, achieving millions of views before its removal. His partnership with P-Square was short-lived, however, as he parted ways with the label in 2012, a move that pushed him toward building his independent career.
After his exit from Square Records, May D took a bold step by establishing his own label, Confam Entertainment, in September 2012. This move allowed him to release music on his own terms and connect more deeply with his growing fanbase. His first album, Chapter One (2013), showcased his versatility, with tracks that quickly became hits, including “Ile Ijo” and “You Want to Know Me” featuring P-Square.
Over the years, May D has released several fan-favorite singles. His sound effortlessly blends Afrobeat with elements of R&B, which has led to collaborations with high-profile artists like Davido, Wizkid, and Akon. Notable hits like “Ibadi,” “All Over You,” and “Bamilo” (featuring Wizkid) have solidified his place in the Afrobeat genre.
One of his standout collaborations was on P-Square’s hit “Chop My Money” remix, which became an anthem across Africa. This song showcased his unique flair and ability to bring a dynamic vibe to any track he’s featured on.
In July 2020, May D announced he had joined Davido Music Worldwide (DMW), Davido’s influential record label, marking a significant comeback in his career. His signing with DMW brought new energy and exposure, reintroducing him to fans and new listeners alike. His EP Sureboy (2021) received rave reviews and reminded fans of the infectious charm he brings to Afrobeat.
Throughout his career, May D has received multiple award nominations, including the Nigeria Entertainment Awards and City People Entertainment Awards. His music video for “Ibadi” won Best Use of Dance in a Video at the Nigerian Music Video Awards, a testament to his impact on Nigeria’s dance culture and music video creativity.
From his early days with P-Square to his independent ventures and recent collaborations under DMW, May D has continued to captivate fans with his unique sound and unwavering commitment to his craft. This Throwback Thursday, we celebrate a true Afrobeat legend whose music remains as timeless as the day we first heard it.
