Olumide Ogunade, popularly known as ID Cabasa, is a name that resonates deeply within the Nigerian music industry. As a legendary music producer and singer, ID Cabasa has significantly shaped the sound and direction of contemporary Nigerian music. His influence extends beyond the beats and melodies, reaching into the very foundation of what modern Nigerian music has become.

ID Cabasa

Early Life and Musical Beginnings

Born on July 29, 1975, in Lagos, Nigeria, ID Cabasa was the third child in a family of four. His musical journey began as a teenager, when he would frequent the renowned Afrodicia Record Studio (formerly Peca), a studio that had produced some of Nigeria’s most legendary artists, including Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, Ebenezer Obey, and King Sunny Ade. The studio’s proximity to his home in Akoka allowed him to immerse himself in the creative process, laying the groundwork for his future career.

Despite his early passion for music, ID Cabasa pursued higher education, earning a degree in Economics from Lagos State University and later, a Master’s degree in Management Economics from the University of Lagos. However, his love for music proved irresistible, and in 2003, after a brief stint in the banking sector, he fully embraced music production.

The Birth of Coded Tunes

In 2002, ID Cabasa founded Coded Tunes, a record label that would go on to become a powerhouse in the Nigerian music scene. Coded Tunes wasn’t just a label; it was a movement. Collaborating with artists like 2phat, Lord of Ajasa, and MC Spakoto, ID Cabasa helped form the Smiling Head Soldier clique, which would later evolve into the Yabtown Squad, a collective of rappers and singers that included a young Reminisce.

Under ID Cabasa’s guidance, Coded Tunes became the launchpad for some of Nigeria’s biggest stars, including Olamide, 9ice, and Banky W. The label was more than just a business venture; it was a creative hub where young talents could develop and thrive, contributing to the rise of a new generation of Nigerian artists.

Legacy and Influence

ID Cabasa’s influence on the Nigerian music industry is undeniable. As the founder of Coded Tunes, he played a pivotal role in shaping the careers of artists who have gone on to achieve international acclaim. His dedication to nurturing talent and pushing the boundaries of music production has left an indelible mark on the industry.

Today, as we look back on his journey, ID Cabasa’s story serves as an inspiration to aspiring musicians and producers. His commitment to his craft, his willingness to take risks, and his ability to recognize and cultivate talent have solidified his place as one of the legends of Nigerian music.
