Making Jump To Our Beats LagosJump Radio
This Throwback Thursday, we honor the incredible journey of Alexander Abolore Adegbola Akande, better known as 9ice. Born on January 17, 1980, 9ice has become a significant figure in the Nigerian music scene, known for his powerful use of the Yoruba language, proverbial lyrics, and unique delivery style.
9ice was born in Ogbomosho, Oyo State, into a polygamous family with five wives and nine children. He grew up in the Shomolu Bariga suburbs of Lagos, where his musical dreams took root. Recognizing his talent, his parents supported his aspiration to become a musician.
9ice’s musical career began in 1996 with his first demo, “Risi de Alagbaja.” However, his breakthrough came in 2000 with his official solo song, “Little Money.” His 2008 single “Gongo Aso” propelled him to fame, leading to a performance at the Nelson Mandela 90th Birthday Tribute concert in London.
The success of “Gongo Aso” earned 9ice multiple awards, including Best Hip Hop Artist of the Year at the MTV Africa Music Awards and four awards at the 2009 Hip Hop World Awards, including Album of the Year and Song of the Year.
After a brief hiatus, 9ice returned with his 2020 album, Tip of the Iceberg: Episode 1, followed by Tip of the Iceberg: Episode II in 2022. He continues to influence the music industry as the founder and CEO of Alapomeji Ancestral Records.
