Anthonia Yetunde Alabi, widely known as Sasha P, has made an indelible mark on the Nigerian music scene. Born on May 21, 1983, Sasha P is celebrated as the “First Lady of Nigerian Hip Hop.” Her multifaceted career spans music, business, law, and motivational speaking, showcasing her versatility and dedication.
Raised in Ibadan by her single mother, Sasha P was the youngest of eight children. She began her musical journey at a young age, influenced by her mother’s educational background. Sasha P attended the International School Ibadan and later earned a bachelor’s degree in Law from the University of Lagos.
Sasha P’s entry into the hip hop scene was a groundbreaking moment for female artists in Nigeria. Signed to eLDee’s Trybe records, she quickly rose to prominence with her debut album, “First Lady,” under STORM records. Her success paved the way for other female rappers and musicians in the Nigerian hip hop industry.
Her first single, “Adara,” won the 2009 Best Female Artist award at the Women in Entertainment Awards in the UK. She continued to make waves with hits like “Only One,” earning nominations for Best Female Video and Best Cinematography at the SoundCity Video Music Awards.
Sasha P was the first Nigerian female artist to perform at the 20th anniversary of the World Music Awards in 2008 and to win the Best Female Award at the MTV Africa Music Awards (MAMA). Her influence extends beyond music; she has been a brand ambassador for Etisalat and a cultural ambassador for Ekiti state.
In 2004, Sasha P ventured into fashion as a bespoke designer. She launched her clothing label, Eclectic by Sasha, in 2012, offering high street fashion in Nigeria. Her humanitarian efforts include participating in the “Save a street child” campaign and the “Maternal Mortality” project, aimed at providing medical care for young mothers.
Sasha P’s impact on the Nigerian music industry and beyond is profound. Her dedication to her craft and her community has solidified her status as a trailblazer and role model for aspiring artists.
