Popularly known as Prince Nico Mbarga, he was a Cameroonian-Nigerian highlife musician, born in Abakaliki, Nigeria. His hit song “Sweet Mother” remains the best-selling African song.
Survived by 10 children, only four are involved in music, working to promote their father’s music style.
Nico played multiple instruments and started in school bands before his professional debut in 1970.
“Sweet Mother,” his major hit, sold over 13 million copies, blending Nigerian and Congolese styles.
Touring England in 1982, Nico was known for his flamboyant performances. He owned the Sweet Mother Hotel.
Tragically, he died in a motorcycle accident on June 23, 1997, leaving behind his iconic song.
