Lola Rae, born Rachel Akosua Funmilola Garton on January 20, 1991, is a Ghanaian singer whose star continues to shine brightly. With her unique blend of musical talent and cultural heritage, Lola Rae has captured the hearts of fans across Africa and beyond.
Born to a British father and a Ghanaian mother in the vibrant city of Lagos, Nigeria, Lola Rae’s journey is as diverse as her background. She began her education at St. Saviour’s School, Ikoyi, and Lekki British International High School before moving to England at 15. There, she pursued her passion for fashion textiles at Central Saint Martins, laying a solid foundation for her future in the creative arts.
Lola Rae’s entertainment career kicked off as a member of the Mystikal Dancing Group, where she first showcased her talent on Britain’s Got Talent in 2010. Her singing impressed judge Simon Cowell and led the group to be signed by Syco for a year. However, Lola Rae’s passion for music drove her to pursue a solo career, and she turned down an invitation to The X Factor to follow her dream.
In November 2012, Lola Rae released her debut single, “Watch My Ting Go,” a track that not only earned her critical acclaim but also secured her a nomination for the Most Promising Female Act to Watch at the 2013 Nigeria Entertainment Awards. This hit single set the stage for her continued success, with her music video premiering on Soundcity TV and earning nominations at the 10th Channel O Music Video Awards.
Lola Rae further solidified her presence in the music industry with her collaboration with Iyanya on the track “Fi Mi Le,” which garnered another nomination at the 2014 Nigeria Entertainment Awards. She also made a memorable cameo as Ice Prince’s love interest in his music video for “More.”
In May 2018, Lola Rae embraced motherhood with the birth of her daughter, adding another beautiful chapter to her life.
Lola Rae’s journey from a talented dancer to a celebrated singer is a testament to her dedication and talent. Her impact on the music industry continues to grow, making her one of the most promising female artists of her generation.
