When you think of D’Prince, what comes to mind? For many, it’s a nostalgia-packed journey through some of the most iconic Afropop hits that helped define Nigerian music. This week, we shine a spotlight on Charles Enebeli, popularly known as D’Prince—a trailblazing artist, entrepreneur, and mentor in the Afrobeat and Afropop scene.
Born on October 23, 1986, in Lagos, Nigeria, D’Prince was destined for greatness. His father, Collins Enebeli, worked as a music production manager, while his elder brother, Don Jazzy, became one of Africa’s most influential music producers and the CEO of Mavin Records.
Nicknamed Omoba (meaning “Child of a King” in Yoruba), D’Prince grew up in a family where music wasn’t just a hobby—it was a lifestyle. Inspired by Afrobeat legends like Fela Kuti and Bob Marley, he started creating music that fused Afrobeat and Afropop with modern, relatable themes.
In 2005, D’Prince joined Mo’ Hits Records, a label spearheaded by Don Jazzy and D’Banj. His breakout single, “Omoba,” quickly became a cultural anthem. As part of the Mo’ Hits team, alongside artists like Wande Coal and Dr. SID, D’Prince contributed to unforgettable tracks on the Curriculum Vitae (CV) album, including hits like “Booty Call” and “Close to You.”
Following the breakup of Mo’ Hits in 2012, D’Prince transitioned to Mavin Records and released his debut album, Frenzy. Tracks like “Goody Bag,” “Take Banana,” and “Amarachi” showcased his playful style, catchy hooks, and flair for creating party anthems.
In 2019, D’Prince launched Jonzing World, a sub-label under Mavin Records. Through Jonzing World, he discovered and mentored rising stars like Rema and Ruger, solidifying his legacy not just as a performer but also as a key figure in shaping the future of Afropop.
D’Prince’s discography is a treasure chest of memorable tracks, including:
D’Prince is more than just an artist; he’s a pioneer. From his early days with Mo’ Hits to his entrepreneurial ventures with Jonzing World, his impact on Nigerian music is undeniable.
