Dekumzy, born Derek Osonwa on March 27, 1983, in Enugu, Nigeria, is a name that resonates with the golden era of Nigerian music. As a prolific record producer, musician, composer, pianist, and songwriter, Dekumzy has left an indelible mark on the Nigerian music scene, crafting hits that have become timeless classics.

The Rise of a Music Maestro

Dekumzy’s journey into the world of music began in the year 2000 when he joined the Federal Ex Students Christian Association (FECA) and quickly became a key figure in the choir, playing the keyboard. This early exposure set the stage for his future in music production. In 2006, Dekumzy’s first major production, “Chinweike” by the duo Resonance, catapulted him into the limelight. The album’s success solidified his reputation as a top-tier producer.

Hit-Making Legacy

Dekumzy’s production portfolio reads like a who’s who of the Nigerian music industry. From “Baby Oku” by Flavour N’abania to “Strong and Mighty” by Mr Raw featuring Flavour N’abania, Dekumzy has been the creative force behind numerous chart-toppers. Other notable works include “Carolina Remix” by Dr Alban featuring Charly Boy, “No Time” by Bracket featuring P-Square, and “Yori Yori Remix” by Bracket featuring 2Baba. His unique ability to blend traditional Nigerian sounds with modern beats has made him a sought-after producer, shaping the sounds of some of the biggest names in the industry.

Beyond Music Production

Dekumzy’s influence extends beyond the studio. He founded the now-defunct girl band trio “Desperate Chicks,” which included Stormrex, Ursula Ice, and Barbie. His knack for discovering and nurturing talent is evident, as Stormrex went on to have a successful solo career, while Ursula Ice eventually became his wife.

Dekumzy has also ventured into film scoring, composing for several Nollywood movies, including “A Million Tears” and “Treasure,” featuring Kate Henshaw. His versatility as a musician and composer has made him a valuable asset in both the music and film industries.
