Making Jump To Our Beats LagosJump Radio
Sonny Okosun, born on January 1, 1947, was more than just a musician; he was a voice for freedom. Okosun was a Nigerian musician known as the leader of the Ozzidi band. His brand of African pop music, Ozzidi, was a synthesis of Afro-beat, reggae, and funk music.
As a young boy, Okosun spent his early years with his grandmother at Ibore, near Irrua in Edo State, before moving to Enugu to live with his parents. His passion for music started early, and he received voice training from family members. He left school to pursue a career in entertainment.
Okosun’s music career started in the 1960s when he participated in a drama group that won a competition. He joined the band the Postmen as a rhythm guitarist, playing covers of popular Western artists.
In the 1970s, he formed the Ozzidi band, blending highlife roots with guitar riffs. His breakthrough came with the single “Help,” followed by major hits like “Fire in Soweto,” which became an international sensation.
His song “Fire in Soweto” became a major international hit, and his first gold album. He continued to release albums and performed globally.
In the late 1980s, his mainstream success started fading, but he continued his career as a gospel musician. He released several gospel albums and founded the House of Prayer Ministry.
Sonny Okosun died on May 24, 2008, at Howard University Hospital, Washington DC, at the age of 61. His musical styles included reggae, highlife, Afro-funk, and gospel, among others.
Sonny Okosun’s music continues to inspire, his legacy forever engraved in the hearts of music lovers.
Rest in power, Sonny Okosun!
