Oladapo Daniel Oyebanjo, famously known as D’banj, is a Nigerian singer, rapper, and television personality. His stage name “D’banj” is a blend of his first name, Dapo, and his surname, Oyebanjo. D’banj gained widespread recognition for his song “Oliver Twist,” a unique fusion of Afrobeats and electronic dance music, which topped the African charts in 2011.
D’banj, aka the Kokomaster or Bangalee, was born in Zaria, Nigeria, to a military officer father and a religious business woman mother. Despite his parents’ hopes for a military career, D’banj chose music, inspired by his late brother, Femi Oyebanjo.
In 2005, he released his debut album, “No Long Thing,” marking the beginning of his musical journey. The album featured hit singles like “Tongolo,” which propelled him to stardom.
D’banj, along with Don Jazzy, founded Mo’ Hits Records, creating several chart-topping hits. The group’s debut album, “Curriculum Vitae,” was a massive success and featured popular tracks like “Move Your Body.”
His song “Oliver Twist” took the world by storm, reaching the top 10 in the UK singles chart. D’banj’s talent even caught the attention of Kanye West, leading to a record deal with G.O.O.D Music.
Apart from his music, he is known for his philanthropic work. He founded the Koko Foundation for Youth and Peace Development and serves as a ONE campaign ambassador.
Despite his success, D’banj has faced controversies, including legal issues regarding alleged fraud. However, he remains committed to his music and philanthropic endeavors.
D’banj’s influence on African music is undeniable, and his journey from Nigeria to international stardom is truly inspiring.
