Niniola Apata, known professionally as Niniola, is a Nigerian singer and songwriter born on December 15, 1986. She participated in the sixth season of Project Fame West Africa in 2013.
Niniola Apata was born and raised in Lagos State, Nigeria, in a family of ten. She attended Apata Memorial High School and later graduated from the University of Lagos.
After finishing as the third runner-up in Project Fame West Africa, Niniola released her debut single “Ibadi” in 2014, produced by Sarz. The song received critical acclaim and topped national music charts.
Her single “Maradona,” released in 2017, spent 13 weeks on South Africa’s Metro FM chart, peaking at number 1 for 6 weeks. It earned her nominations at the 2018 BET Awards and SAMAs.
In 2019, “Maradona” was sampled in Beyoncé’s soundtrack album The Lion King: The Gift. Niniola received her Grammy nomination certificate for her work as a composer on the album in April 2020.
In June 2021, Niniola received her second Grammy nomination certificate for her work on The Lion King: The Gift. Her single “Maradona” was certified gold in South Africa in July 2021 and platinum in January 2023.
Niniola’s music blends afrobeats, amapiano, and house music, a style she calls “afrohouse.” She loves singing in Yoruba, believing it enhances the beauty of her song delivery.
Niniola is the older sister of singer Teni.
