From Humble Beginnings to Musical Stardom

Born in 1942, Ebenezer Obey’s journey began in a small town in Ogun State, Nigeria.  Coming from an Egba-Yoruba background, Obey’s musical talent blossomed early.  After honing his skills under the tutelage of Fatai Rolling-Dollar’s band, Obey embarked on a remarkable musical career.

The Rise of The Inter-Reformers

In the mid-1950s, Obey formed his own band, “The International Brothers.”  This group later evolved into the iconic “Inter-Reformers,” known for their electrifying blend of Highlife and Juju music.  Obey’s innovative use of Yoruba percussion and intricate lyrics captivated audiences across Nigeria.

Obey’s music transcended mere entertainment.  He wove thought-provoking proverbs and social commentary into his danceable compositions.  His music often praised successful Nigerians and explored themes of faith and social justice.
