Las Gidi Kingin: A Bold New Voice in Nigerian Music Boluwatife
Las Gidi Kingin, born Steven Idode, is a Nigerian artist from Edo State who grew up in the vibrant streets of Ojuelegba and Shitta. Now based in Toronto, he has been recording music since 2008, though he only recently started releasing his work to the world.
Las Gidi Kingin’s musical journey began in church, later earning him recognition as an entertainer in high school. His biggest musical influence? Fela Kuti. Unlike many artists who meticulously plan their songwriting, he describes his process as organic and spiritual, allowing the music to take its own shape.
His upcoming 5-track EP, Evablazing, drops in February and showcases his raw storytelling ability. One of his tracks, “There Are Day,” explores hunger—not just as a lack of food but as the deep yearning to chase one’s dreams. He believes in making music with depth, tackling vulnerabilities and social issues rather than conforming to industry trends.
Las Gidi Kingin is vocal about his views on the Nigerian music scene. While he appreciates its growth, he critiques the lack of diversity in themes and the trend of artists singing in high-pitched voices, which he finds unnecessary. His biggest challenge? Funding for marketing.
Unlike many emerging artists, he has no plans to initiate collaborations. He respects older musicians who built their legacies without features and intends to keep his work authentic and independent. However, he remains open to collaborations if approached by other artists.
When he’s not making music, Las Gidi Kingin is a football fanatic (Arsenal supporter) and an NBA fan (OKC Thunder). He also has a background in acting, with appearances in Yoruba movies available on YouTube.
For new listeners, “Radio” is the perfect introduction to his sound. Looking ahead, he envisions himself at the top of the global music industry in five years.
