When discussing pioneers of Nigerian hip-hop, Jesse Jagz stands as a significant figure. Born Jesse Garba Abaga, he has left a lasting impact on the Nigerian music scene with his signature blend of hip-hop, reggae, and Afropop. Known for his lyrical depth and experimental sound, Jesse Jagz has continually broken barriers and challenged musical norms. This Throwback Thursday, we celebrate his influence, achievements, and the unique contributions that have made him a legend in African music.
Jesse Jagz was born on August 10, 1984, in Jos, Plateau State, Nigeria. Growing up in a musical family with a pastor father and gospel-singing mother, he was exposed to various sounds and instruments from a young age. By seven, he joined the church choir and later honed his skills on the drums and other instruments. His love for music grew as he formed and joined multiple bands, including Gospel Insanity and Eleven Thirty. Jesse’s early success began with his first single, “Africa,” released in 2006, which topped the charts on northern Nigerian radio.
In 2010, Jesse Jagz made his official debut with the album Jag of All Tradez under Chocolate City, a label that also houses artists like his brother, M.I Abaga. The album, produced entirely by Jesse, was a mix of genres and introduced him as a versatile artist willing to experiment with sounds. Though commercially successful, Jag of All Tradez received mixed reviews due to its unconventional style, yet it established Jesse as a fresh voice in Nigerian hip-hop. Hit singles like “Wetin Dey” and “Pump It Up” helped the album go platinum in Nigeria, marking his entry as a formidable talent.
After three years with Chocolate City, Jesse Jagz made a bold move by exiting the label in 2013. He subsequently founded his own label, Jagz Nation, and released his second album, Jagz Nation, Vol. 1: Thy Nation Come, later that year. The album, featuring singles like “Redemption” and “God on the Mic,” showcased his skillful blend of reggae and hip-hop, establishing Jesse Jagz as an artist unafraid to push boundaries. Critics and fans praised the album’s depth, with collaborations from artists like Wizkid, 9ice, and Brymo adding to its rich sound.
In 2014, Jesse released Jagz Nation, Vol. 2: Royal Niger Company, an album that dived even deeper into Nigerian history and culture. Featuring samples from artists like Fela Kuti and blending various musical elements, this album is a true representation of Jesse’s artistry. He continued to evolve, even rejoining Chocolate City in 2015 for a short stint, contributing to their compilation album, The Indestructible Choc Boi Nation. But the call for independence remained strong, leading him to pursue further creative freedom.
In 2017, Jesse Jagz returned with Odysseus, an album that blended Caribbean influences with his signature hip-hop sound. Named after the Greek hero, this album was a personal journey and included collaborations with stars like Burna Boy. It showcased Jesse’s growth as an artist, embracing new genres while maintaining his lyrical integrity. The album received accolades from both fans and critics, solidifying his status as one of Nigeria’s most innovative musicians.
Jesse’s latest project, Garba (2020), a five-track EP, was a reflection on his roots and cultural heritage. Named after his family surname, the EP integrates Afropop, trap, and hip-hop, showing Jesse’s versatility and commitment to storytelling. His journey from local charts in Jos to international recognition is a testament to his dedication and unique artistry.
Jesse Jagz’s influence in Nigerian music is undeniable. Through his unconventional style, deep lyrical content, and boundary-pushing sound, he has inspired countless artists and fans alike. His works continue to be a source of inspiration for those in the hip-hop and Afropop scenes, bridging cultural and genre divides in the Nigerian music industry.
The journey of Jesse Jagz is one of resilience, creativity, and independence. From his early days with Chocolate City to his rise as an independent artist under Jagz Nation, Jesse has proven time and again that he is not just a musician but a visionary. As we celebrate this Throwback Thursday, we look forward to what lies ahead for the Nigerian music icon.
