When we talk about Nigerian music heavyweights, one name that stands tall is Orezi. Known for his energetic performances and captivating tunes, Orezi has been making waves since the early 2010s. This Throwback Thursday, we take a trip down memory lane to explore the career of the hitmaker behind the song that took over airwaves, “Rihanna.”
Born Esegine Allen on March 28, 1986, Orezi hails from Owhelogbo, Isoko in Delta State, Nigeria. As the eldest of five children, he grew up in a close-knit family and attended Command Secondary School in Abakaliki. Orezi pursued higher education at the University of Lagos, where he completed his degree and later fulfilled the NYSC national service program.
Orezi started his music career in 2009, but it was in 2013 that he rose to prominence with the release of “Rihanna”, a song that quickly became a massive hit. From that moment on, Orezi was a name that couldn’t be ignored in the Nigerian music scene.
“Rihanna” was the turning point in Orezi’s career. Released in 2013, the song wasn’t just catchy—it was groundbreaking. The infectious tune earned him widespread recognition, and the music video, which featured a Rihanna look-alike, added a visual appeal that captivated fans across Africa.
Orezi once revealed in an interview that navigating the Nigerian music industry without financial backing was tough, but his undeniable talent and relentless drive paid off, making “Rihanna” the anthem that propelled him to stardom.
Following the success of “Rihanna,” Orezi kept the momentum going with tracks like “You Garrit”, “Shoki” (French version), and the 2015 release of his debut album, The Ghen Ghen Album. The album featured heavyweights like Davido, Wizkid, Ice Prince, and Timaya, among others, cementing his place as a force in the Nigerian music industry.
Orezi’s sound is a unique blend of Afropop, Dancehall, and Reggae, and he has worked with top producers such as Kiddominant, Del B, and Dokta Frabz. Over the years, his tracks have consistently topped music charts, with hit songs like “Booty Bounce” and “Ogede” becoming fan favorites.
Orezi’s talent hasn’t gone unnoticed. In 2013, he won Best Reggae Dancehall Artiste at the Nigerian Music Video Awards (NMVA), and he also took home awards at the South South Music Awards (SSMA). He’s been nominated for multiple accolades, including The Headies and the Channel O Music Video Awards, further showcasing his impact on the music scene.
While Orezi’s early days were marked by chart-topping hits and award recognition, his influence continues to thrive in today’s Afrobeat and Afropop landscape. From collaborating with top artists to pushing boundaries in the Afropop scene, Orezi has cemented his legacy as one of Nigeria’s finest.
As we throw it back to the golden era of “Rihanna” and “You Garrit”, let’s celebrate Orezi for his contribution to the growth of Afrobeat and the global recognition of Nigerian music.
