eLDee, born Lanre Dabiri on May 23, 1977, is a name that resonates with fans of early Nigerian hip-hop and Afrobeats. As one of the pioneers of the genre, eLDee’s influence on the Nigerian music scene is undeniable. From his early days with Trybesmen to his successful solo career, eLDee helped shape modern Afrobeats and left a lasting impact on the industry. Today, we’re taking a trip down memory lane to revisit the achievements of this legendary artist.

Early Beginnings with Trybesmen

eLDee’s journey in music began in 1998 when he co-founded the group Trybesmen alongside rappers KB and Freestyle. The group quickly gained popularity with their unique blend of hip-hop, highlife, and traditional Afrobeats, becoming one of the key players in promoting the fusion of these sounds. By the early 2000s, Trybesmen were household names, and their music had spread across Africa, helping to pave the way for the rise of Afrobeats.

eLDee’s Solo Success

After moving to the United States in 2002, eLDee embarked on a solo career that would further solidify his legacy. His debut album, “Long Time Coming” (2004), marked the beginning of a series of successful projects. The follow-up album, “Return of the King” (2006), featured the hit single “I Go Yarn” and went on to win Best International Album at the 2007 Nigeria Entertainment Awards in New York City.

Over the years, eLDee released more albums, including “Big Boy” (2008), “Is It Your Money” (2010), and “Undeniable” (2012), each filled with hit tracks that showcased his versatility as both a rapper and singer. His contributions to the music industry didn’t stop at his own records, as eLDee also founded Trybe Records, a label that brought together talented artists under the collective name Da Trybe.

A Career Beyond Music

Beyond his work as an artist, eLDee is a multifaceted creative. He has worked as a producer, director, and interactive media consultant. His efforts have extended beyond entertainment, with eLDee co-founding Playdata, Nigeria’s first official airplay chart, which monitors music consumption on radio. This contribution has had a profound impact on the way Nigerian artists and songs are tracked and recognized.

Retirement and Life After Music

In 2019, eLDee publicly announced his retirement from music, explaining that the path his career was taking did not allow him to dedicate enough time to his family. Now based in Atlanta, USA, eLDee continues to influence the entertainment industry in various ways while maintaining his commitment to personal growth and family life.

Although eLDee has stepped away from the microphone, his contributions to Nigerian music continue to resonate. His forward-thinking approach and boundary-pushing creativity made him a true pioneer, and his legacy lives on in the Afrobeats music we enjoy today.
