Early Life and Background

Liya was born in Lagos in 1999 and raised in the bustling neighborhoods of Ketu and Alapere. Her family later moved to Ikorodu, where she attended Arabic school. She went on to study Yoruba Language at the University of Ilorin, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Linguistics. Growing up around diverse musical influences, Liya developed a unique sound that blends Afro-fusion with melodic grace.

Breakthrough with Davido Music Worldwide

Liya’s big break came in 2020 when she signed with Davido Music Worldwide (DMW). Her debut single under the label, “Melo,” quickly gained traction. The music video, released on December 8, 2020, featured Davido and was directed by Dammy Twitch. Liya’s collaboration with Davido showcased her exceptional talent and solidified her place in the Nigerian music scene.

Career Highlights

Liya was the first female artist signed to DMW, a significant milestone in her career. In 2021, she released her debut EP, “Alari,” which received critical acclaim. The EP included standout tracks like “Melo” and “Adua.” The latter’s remix, featuring Simi, further highlighted her versatility as an artist. Liya was also nominated for Best Vocal Performance (Female) at The Headies for her song “Alari.”

Artistry and Influences

Liya describes her music genre as Afro-fusion, blending various influences to create a distinctive sound. She cites Angélique Kidjo, Aá¹£a, and Shola Allyson as her musical inspirations. Liya’s ability to incorporate these influences into her music has set her apart in the industry.
